When is it okay to ask for a free estimate?

No, the client always comes first!

Hi,

It is always ok to ask questions and expect free quotations!

I enjoy the process of building and love to share my knowledge and experience with prospective clients. I have always given free advice at initial meetings, suggestions and of course free estimates.

When the time comes to do some actual consulting (such as helping to entitle a project) then fees should begin to apply but always with an agreement and full understanding of the scope of the consulting, the estimated time invlolved and of course the cost- either per hour or for the entire scope of the consulting.

Good luck and have fun with your project!

All estimates related to building costs should be free. We do not charge any fee for estimates. The exception is if it is for insurance, appraisal or any related paperwork where there is no guarantee work will be done at all. Most customers are upfront about this though.

All estimates related to building costs should be free. We do not charge any fee for estimates. The exception is if it is for insurance, appraisal or any related paperwork where there is no guarantee work will be done at all, let alone with your company. Most customers are upfront about this though. That would be the only time an estimate would not be free.

Our estimates are always free. The only time that changes is when it goes from an estimate to us actually doing service or troubleshooting the system or whatever the case may be. We always clarify this with our customers and we give them a detailed estimate and let them know what to expect before any work is started.

We do not charge for estimates, it’s part of the business .

no, if your add says that you do free estimates then its a really bad idea to change your mind just because of a big sized job…

Estimates are always free and every contractor “should” provide a free estimate. So a client can realistically compare estimates, the client should prepare a scope of work for each contractor to base their estimate on, so the client can then compare apples to apples when considering which contractor to hire.

Free Estimates are a must. We provide free on-site evaluations and a free printed quote. The only time we dont give estimates is when the same client continues to try to reduce pricing on original estimates or tries to continuousy get other options without commiting to anything.

Upon an onsite evaluation, phone consulation, and/or showroom visit- once we have a very good idea of our clients desires and have discussed all options- we generally provide 2 to 3 estimates for free. These estimates include all discussed options. We even work with our client’s budgets and answer more questions and provide information to ensure our clients understand that we are professionals and that our goal is their satisfaction. But when we see the questions keep coming without a deposit on any of the several provided estimates, or it sounds like the client is trying to get unlicensed workers to perform the project at a lower cost, thats when we stop the free service.

Also, in another scenario for example a standby generator installation, where site surveys and flood elevation certificates are needed to properly choose a location for the generator set and raise the generator above the base flood elevation- if the property owner does not have such documents and is not willing to pay a surveyor to provide them, then we can tell they are not really serious about the project, in which case we will provide a verbal ballpark estimate, usually based on previous, similar completed projects.

Here in Pennsylvania and in some other states, legally speaking there is no such thing as an estimate, free or not because of state laws designed to protect consumers from dishonest contractors. I personally think making the T&M model illegal is not in the best interest of consumers, but it’s not up to me.

We always offer free estimates and so should all contractors. Our service area is over one hundred miles, but we never charge to come to your home to look at a potential job. It is hard to determine exactly what the homeowner needs and what materials and labor will be required. Therefore it is best to look at the site, ask the homeowner what they want to accomplish, determine the cost to do the job, and leave them with a valid estimate that is good for three to six months.

No. An estimate is a word. Actions speak louder than words.

We always provide free estimates to our customers.

Estimate giving is part of being a contractor. This information will help the customer make a educated decision.
