Should a homeowner always get multiple bids on a project?

Yes i would support this recommendstion. In many cases when I hear from homeowners who are upset because they’ve been overcharged, the homeowners could have avoided the bad outcome if they would have seen multiple bids before starting the project.

A home owner should get 3 proposals and if there not comfortable look for more. Make sure the proposal is in wrighting and not verbal, Ask them for a basic breakdown of there price such as cost of material, Labor, Finishes and installation. Also ask them to write a brief decription of the materials, Hardware, Finishes etc. This way you can compare Apples to Apples and not Apples to Oranges. Never take a Verbal, Phone or guestimite bid. After reviewing your 3 bids choose 2 of the bids and ask them for samples, Such as material, Hardware and color. Now you are ready to make an incormed decision.

Definitely. No questions asked. Homeowners should always obtain multiple bids from contractors before agreeing to contract for services. Most projects will entail several if not more visits to the home. The homeowner should have a good rapport with the contractor. After interviewing and checking their license and insurance, one should have a good feel as to how a working relationship will pan out. After checking creditials, the homeowner may find that the cheaper bid lacks proper licensing or just doesn’t have a solid reference check. Or to the contrary the more expensive bid may have proper licensing but lacks the customer attention best suited for your needs. In short, do your due diligence, take your time, and interview, interview, interview.

Perfectly reasonable for a client to obtain multiple proposals. That being said, the client needs to understand that when comparing proposals, clients have to ensure all contractors are bidding the same scope of work and have the same inclusions / exclusions.
