Foundation or roof, which is more important?

Foundation is more important, without a strong foundation there is no sense to worry about anything else because foundation is the most important part that is why when we build a house we start with the foundation.

Both are equally important these two items alone are the foundation of a great project. The interior and exterior finishes are the Icing on the cake, that make your project special to your and your family.

It may seem like a simple part of the overall construction process, but getting the foundation right is incredibly important. The biggest reason for this is that any mistakes you make in the foundation will only get worse as you go up. It’s known as compounding defects and it means that mistakes grow. Just entering an room with uneven floor can give a bad impression, all the decoration, furniture and even walking in a un even floor is uncorfortable. Think about those uneven tables that move while you eat. Having a grat fundation means any construction later on can be added safely too.

Both are just as important but definetely the foundation is more important. There would be no reason to build anything else if the foundation is not secure. I don’t think anyone wants to live in a house where there is foundation problems. You will want to address the roof right after that as well.

Your foundation is … Cause the foundation holds all the live load and dead load weight .

It sounds to me like you’ve asked this question because you’re trying to figure out which repair to make first - I’m guessing you’ve got budget constraints. Hey, everybody does, even me.

So! Which job to do first? That depends.

What sort of a situation are you in with your foundation? Are we talking about leaks, cracks, or crumbling? We could be referring to drainage issues, which has been a situation with houses due to the recent rains.

What’s the condition of your roof? Do you have serious leaks? If so, you might be in danger of an imminent ceiling collapse. If they’re small leaks, or you have a roof that still works, but is old, that’s another consideration.

These are all questions that need to be answered before figuring out which job to do first.

I’d say: If your foundation does not flood on a regular basis, if you have no crumbling concrete, if there are no visible cracks, and if the drainage around your house is good, you can get away with not repairing the foundation right now.

Likewise, if your roof is still in good condition, don’t mess with it. Get an estimate, and weigh your options.

Further, if you have foundation flooding, it might just be because your gutters are not extended far enough away from your house, and their drainage does not run away from the house. This is part of a roof repair that will help your foundation very quickly!

I’d say call two different contractors and get opinions on how bad the damage is. ASK how soon things need to be done to avoid problems down the road!
