Is the roof the most important aspect of the home?

You can live without walls, doors, windows, electricity but you cannot live without a roof.

With no walls you have no roof

To me the roof is one of the most important aspects of your home. Without a good solid roof your interior and framing could be damaged. Leaking roofs are one of the main couses in mold and rotting on you sheathing, insulation, drywall, and framing. A good looking roof will also give your home a nice value and a good curb apeal.

Just to play devil’s advocate, isn’t the foundation more important? Even if you have a great roof, it seems like you’re going to get a sinking (pun intended) feeling if you don’t have a solid foundation.

Roofing is very imporant in a home, it insulates your home from rain, and the sun, it protects the inside of your home from getting destroyed.

I would say the roof is a very important aspect of the house it not only protects the inside of your house and everything in it also protects the insides of the wall where mold can develope and electricity etc… are built in!

A roof is the one object that turns your home into a shelter. The type of roof you chose for your home or business can vary depending on the goals you’ve set for your structure. There are several types of roof coverings available today ranging from high to average in cost and they all vary in life expectancy. Typically asphalt shingles are the least expensive of the roofing products and offer the widest range of color options with a life expectancy ranging from 15 to 30 years. Then metal follows offering a range of colors , exposed and non exposed fastening systems and average life expectancy is 40 years. Metal usually runs about 30% more than shingles however, has the largest return on investment due to its energy effiency. Next would be wood shake whis gives a home the rustic and colonial style with a high price tag. The average life expectancy is 50 + years and the bill goes with the product. This is the least maintenance free roof covering available. Next in the most expensive category and typically the longest life expectancy is Slate. Beautiful in all types of styles and colors. If you choose this type of product you may be required to add additional framing to the house to support the added weight. No matter what product you choose to complete your roof this one decision is key and essential for creating a secure shelter for years to come.

The roof is definetly one of the more important componants of the structure. The foundation, equally important provides a basis for stability, however, if the roof fails, everything under it is subject to failure leaving the foundation with nothing to support. There is probably more damage done to structures by failed and leaking roofs than any other single system of the building. This is due to the fact that the roofing industry suffers from a lack of oversight, an undeducated and improperly trained work force, and a lack of regard for the structure or the property owner. Though most all munincipalities require permits for commercial roofing, the inspectors rarely look close to see that all aspects of the job are done to the approved specifications. In fact many times the inspector will not even scale the ladder but will take someones word for it that the roof is complete. In over 20 years I have only seen an inspector on a new residential roof one time. When dealing with this industry it is important for any owner or purchasing adgent to become educated regarding the project at hand and know the difference between systems, applications standards and Contractors. In the end, it is buyer beware. Just becuase a contractor has a license, insurance and the appropriate bond does not mean you will be protected from a huge mess, a nasty law suit, or both.

Yes, because without the roof your home will be damaged from rain, sun, etc.

I feel that it is a close call between the roof and foundation to which is the most important aspect to the house. Either way a good solid roof is essential to keeping your property protected.

Yes. I think so. Your insurance doesn’t have to worry about any claims with the exception of burglary, fire. It’s the most expensive maintenace project that a home owner ever encounters.

Roof is the most important part on the home. You can have a roof on corner posts, no need for a full foundation. It is great to have a roof over your head.

If you are like me, every aspect of my home is important to myself or somebody else in the household. However, almost every “Money Pit” or nightmare home story includes a roof leak in it at some point. A poor roofing job can cost a homeowner an immense amount of money, not to mention having to deal with the stress of the situation altogether. As a roofing vontractor, I would say that I think, personally, that a well crafted roof adds a great deal to the look of a home. Here is a link to some examples of our work that demonstrate this! http://pacificroofdesign.com/Design_Center_1.html

Yes the roof is the most important part of the house. A leaking roof can cause so much damage to your house that you end up not only paying for a new roof but also to fix the damage the old one did.

With the roof really protecting all other portions of the home i would have to say its the most important.

Everything starts with your foundation/structural integrity, and is capped with a good roof. They are both essential and tie on the list of importance. It’s like a cake without icing, or having only icing without cake (if you will).

Absolutely. No matter what ind of home you have the roof is instrumental in keeping you from feeling weather in any climate. It prevents rain, sun, wind, hail, and snow from hitting your head! Plus, it protects everything under it, including your family.

Great point about the curb value - a nice new roof (especially with the new architactural shingles) really spices up a home!

I am not sure one could really live without walls, windows and electricity but Yes the roof is one of the most important aspects of the home. Like anything built, whatever comes underneath must be solid such as the foundation and walls for the roof to be solid too.
Many people are concerned with kitchens because you see them and get the most value back for dollars put in. They also worry about windows and covering them or impact rating but if you have a breach in your roof, it could be catastrophic. You could end up having to replace tens of thousand of dollars of interior items from furniture to that beautiful kitchen you just remodeled to sheet rock, flooring, and electrical from water intrusion. So yes the roof being installed correctly and the right type of material should be given a very high priority. The roof is often forgotten about until water is leaking in, regardless of the condition or if it needs attention.

This is a good question… Most would say yes, however it is actually the second most important aspect of your home. The foundation is THE most important aspect, without a proper foundation you have nothing to build upon. That being said… your roof plays the second most important role of your home as it keeps you, as well as the structure, shielded from all the elements of mother nature. Hope this helps!

This is a really interesting topic, for me roof is one main aspect of the home but the most and the very important is like the foundation of your house.
