Put a budget together. Financially concider & plan for the unexpected. Depending upon your project this will help with the stress of funding and cost overruns. Make sure you know what you want and make sure you can communicate what you want done clearly so there isn’t any misconceptions later.

First of all Important. Budget! You definetly want to budget yourself so you dont get to deep into a project and run out of Funds. I cant tell you how many times ive heard of people having to stop and not finish their projects because they cant afford to finish. Second check License’s on any Contractor you hire also look for their Reviews. These are key to maximizing a positive outcome on any Project.

If you definitly know what you want, then a set of plans & material list would assure every one is bidding on the same thing. If you’re looking for creative or functional ideas, then contact some contractors, & see who is most willing to talk with you & give you information.

Get to Know your project. One helpful excersive to perform with the contractor prior to construction, using the estimate as a reference guide is to go through every detail scripted on that estimate. This way a client will know exactly what will be happening for each item. You should spend whatever time neccesary to understand the process. Ask the contractor what unexpected situations could arise. An experienced contractor would be able to do this and provide you with a cost. Stay involved with weekly updates through face to face meetings and electroniclly.

Always check out there website and recommendations pryor to hire!

Yes a homeowner should prepare for a project before they start hiring because the homeowner needs to figure out what kind of budget they would like to stay within for the project then it would be good to go ahead and get plans together or write down their ideas and wants so that they can tell the contractor when they come to do an estimate and not forget all the details to the project. Also another important aspect of preparing is researching licensed contractors in the surrounding area of the project.
